  1. All items above are taken care of. Now all we need is an Away Team CO, and we're set to begin...
  2. *Waves arms* This is me signing up. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_biggrin.gif&key=64cd7b7a0036899205810ec0a5b90ed7121d5889dd92733089c47c9758b7f4ae">
  3. This is the signup thread for the "Home Team". Sign up by replying in this thread. The Home Team is initially restricted to WW members only. If we find ourselves short-handed, we may hire some mercenaries to fly alongside us. Be aware that our pay-scale is rather weak... ;) All active WW members have access to the "Home Team" private forum area. You don't have to participate in the actual battle to be part of the team. We're aware that scheduling conflicts in real life may mean you can't fly the actual mission (currently scheduled for July 8th), but your input in the planning will be just as important to your team mates. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_biggrin.gif&key=64cd7b7a0036899205810ec0a5b90ed7121d5889dd92733089c47c9758b7f4ae">

  5. S! I'm going to empty the current "Away Team" usergroup. Those of you currently listed there may (should) get an email from the forum stating you've been removed from the group. Not to worry, as folks sign up for the event they will be added to the usergroup. What's all the fuss about a usergroup anyway? It's how I set read/post priveleges for private forum areas... And each side (Home and Away) will have a private forum area in which to discuss their plans. For now, until an Away Team CO is found, I'll set 2GvSAP_Chief as the Away Team usergroup moderator. I'll also create the private forum areas for each side, just so they're available to begin stategy conversations.
  6. ((sigh)) That's two who are having problems with the attachment thing now. ](*,)
  7. Are we ready for the private planning forum areas to be created for each side?

  9. If that vid makes it out on the open, it will be an instant classic amongst all computer geeks... I'm sure it will eventually make it onto TV on one of those "virulent videos" shows I get a kick out of watching.
  10. 327 paint schemes!! Well, damn... there's 327mb of download right there! /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_rolleyes.gif&key=1e8c06ab12fb541f5359109fc2a9aa78454b8063e7aa8862e992af3163d7b4b4"> The new maps may be quite cool... especially Burma. We'll see a wealth of Flying Tiger missions pop up. Kalkin Ghol will be cool as well : I-16's vs Ki-27's. Ought to be some seriously fun dogfighting action there. :D
  11. I'm sure this won't make any sense either... ;) By changing mode on the controller, you're giving yourself that many more possible buttons to assign. Button 1 in mode 1 can be fire guns; button 1 in mode 2 can be fire cannons; button 1 in mode 3 can be fire all guns. You have to tell the controller what each button press in each mode does, and also tell the game through it's HOTAS setup which keys or controls are doing what. There's (at least) two ways to assign a command in-game: I go about it like this: I assign a key or key-combo for everything I want/need/wish-for inside the game, then assign those keyboard commands to various buttons/hat directions, per mode, in the profiling software for the controller. Except for the stuff that uses a slider or rotary control. Those I assign directly (X axis is ailerons, RZ axis is rudder, U1 axis is elevator trim ). The upside: If I lose a controller I still have keyboard commands I can use. Downside: It means if I knock a controller button while doing standard Windows things, odd things happen... /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_rolleyes.gif&key=1e8c06ab12fb541f5359109fc2a9aa78454b8063e7aa8862e992af3163d7b4b4"> I think Dub goes about it the other way, using default Direct-X button assignments (button 1 in mode 1 is seen as button 1; button 1 in mode 2 might be seen as button 14 in Windows, for example) and simply presses that button when assigning a control inside the game. Either way works, it's just a matter of personal preference how you set it up. ~~~ I just confused the hell out of myself by re-reading that. :P To get a look at exactly how my controls are set up, and compare them with your own, here's the key assignments portion of the C:Program FilesUbi SoftIL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten BattlesUserssettings.ini file ... this is *only* the key assignments portion of that file... 12. Yep... doin' good to get off the ground at all. Especially if you've got the (so-called) "Complex Engine Management" difficulty switches turned on. Some -most- of the planes are downright nasty on take-off rolls if you simply slam the throttle to full and pull back on the stick. You'll find yourself going across the runway instead of down it, then bouncing across the grass where you'll do one (or more) of the following : 1) dig your prop into the ground and end up with your tail in the air, going nowhere 2) bounce just high enough to wreck the landing gear and skid to smoking stop 3) bounce a little higher, and explode on contact with the ground 4) rip the landing gear off, bend the prop, but somehow manage to stay airborne long enough to realize you're only going as far as you can float before doing #3 5) Get all squirrelly and sideways as you go down the runway, work like mad to get it all straightened out and think "Man, I saved that one!" ... only to smack into the tower and explode. 6) actually make it into the air without wrecking anything... yet. By the way... The above are all take-off results I've had in the last month. You're doing fine Pepe. :D
  13. A thread in one of the private areas alluded to the new Manchuria add-on, and yes... most of the download will be skins for the new aircraft, and a bunch for existing aircraft. ((sigh))
  14. When you guys get to "needing" to use the modes, and it will happen sooner or later, here's what I do: I have one mode dedicated to air-to-air stuff (specific keys for finding targets, selecting weapons, etc., for shooting down aircraft). Another mode is for air-to-ground in single-seat planes (Jabo or fighter-bomber work). And the third mode I still haven't entirely configured, for multi-engine level-bombing work. I still use a ton of multi-key combos that I haven't mapped in to mode three yet. This one started out as a navigation mode for me, but I found I never required a whole mode set just for nav work. I use a different stick than you fellas (vS's old ThrustMaster Cougar) but the idea is the same no matter which stick you're using.
  15. S! Graf, I was wondering if the attachment/upload thing was working for you yet? I know there was a problem shortly before I went on vacation and I'm not sure if it was resolved or not. Also: I took a few pics with the digital camera out the window of the plane I was on this morning... I thought you might be able to use them as backgrounds for future projects. Look in the WW file vault, "for_graf" folder. A ~ 23mb .rar archive with several pictures. Maybe you can use them... maybe not. Let me know when you've downloaded the .rar file so I can remove it. ... edit... D/L Link FWIW... the pics were taken over Wisconsin during descent to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Some taken from high altitude (34,000 feet if I remember correctly), and a few more from lower alt. I thought the one with the sun glaring brightly might make an interesting "Hun in the sun" type thing, with cockpit internals up close to the viewer's perspective and a closing bandit dropping out of the sun's brightness... Just a thought I had anyway. No way I could make it work, but you could... ;) /second edit/ I should have looked closer... a couple of those have my camera's reflection visible (442 and 444 for certain). Oh well...
  16. Thank you for posting Brian, it really means a lot to have direct contact with Art's family. I'm at a loss again as my tears fall, after reading that Art's boat flags and his WW wings went with him to heaven. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_cry.gif&key=af9ce749339d5f0fdb3c25b91f656db35bace5cb48def1ec035d87a80c3c565e">
  17. I can help on some of this stuff... OpenGL will probably be the best thing to use here. Try both, but I presonally believe OpenGL is a bit faster and prettier. That shouldn't be happening. I use 1280x1024 for my desktop resolution and 1152x(whatever) for in-game resolution, and never have any trouble as the screen resolution is switched before or after game play. You could try running the game in the same resolution as your desktop, if that resolution option is available; the game uses a different aspect ratio that only matches at a couple levels with normal desktop resolutions. There are a few fellas here with X-52 controllers. Try a forum search for "X52 profiles" and see what turns up. Try thr same with Google and get a wider choice of stuff. If all else fails, stop by the Saitek forums and browse around looking for X-52 profiles for IL-2. View system: there are several detailed methods. The basic two modes use a hat switch for view control: snap and pan. F9 key (by default) changes between the two modes. The names are self explanatory... snap views instantly rotate your view to the position indicated by the hat press; pan views will move your view perspective at whatever rate you're pushing the hat (push hard, view will pan quickly). A better method (IMO) is to use the micro-stick on your X-52 as a mouse cursor. This will allow you to use your thumb to control your views, especially as you search the skies for contacts. It takes some getting used to, but is very handy and much more intuitive than using a hat switch switch. I still use the micro-stick mouse for view control on occasion. The best: Go out and spend some money on a Track-IR unit. This is a little gadget that sits on top of your monitor and monitors your head position by using infra-red reflective dots. Again, it takes a little getting used to, but is the ultimate method for controlling views. There are several view control key combinations that you'll want to familiarize yourself with as well. The standard "snap to forward view" (keypad 8 I think) is good if you get disoriented in a dogfight and need to find forward again. The various padlock keys may be useful until you're able to follow a target without the padlock ( F4 padlocks an enemy plane; shift-F4 padlocks a friendly plane; "Y" and "U" will jump the padlock to the next or previous target in view; F5 will padlock enemy ground units; shift-F5 will padlock friendly ground units. There is also a "snap to center while padlocked" key that you can assign (to whatever key or combo you like) that will retain the padlock on you current target, but snap your view forward to re-orient yourself with the front of your own aircraft. Very handy key to have. All those key assignments are assuming internal/cockpit views only... there are a whole slew of additional keys for external viewing. That depends on your hardware... I have an older P4 2.26g with 1gb RAM and a GeForce 6800 with 128mb RAM. I run the game at 1152 x(whatever... 800+ I think) in "perfect" settings, with 4x anti-aliasing and 4x anisotropic filtering, at an average frame rate of 30, +/- a few. This is pretty low for most of the guys here who prefer to fly at 50+ fps with roughly the same settings on more powerful PC's. For your machine, I'd suggest running 1024x768x32bit, with the various video options set to "excellent". Be sure to turn off the in-game voice chat feature (found inside the hardware/sound setup area). We use TeamSpeak for voice comms since the in-game feature is an atrocious lag-inducing pile of crap, code-wise. Confused yet?? Well.. it's been five years since IL-2 first came out, and we're still not 100% up to speed with all it's intricacies...
  18. http://www.rrgstudios.com/EN_02_06_Manchuria.shtml More direct link toi the nuts and bolts of this add-on. I'm not overly thrilled about the IL-10 and/or any Korean War map possbilities, but I do think it's high time we got a few more Japanese aircraft in the mix. The Ki-21 and Ki-27 are a good start, but where's the A5M and G3M? I'll get this one just for the IJA add-ons and Manchuria map.
  19. As I understand it, the Bf-109 JagdGeschwadern operated over the southern Kursk battlefields, while the Fw-190 JagdGeschwadern operated over the northern Kursk battlefields. So if we're re-creating the southern battlefield(s) of the over-all "Battle of Kursk", then we should see nothing but Bf-109 fighters for the axis side.
  20. Neat stuff Pierre /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/thumbsup.gif&key=740950605ea2b767b0522526afb1c81551f03118b6b4457f095c43ae8aab1fd4"> The description box allows only a limted amount of text to be entered (as you noticed).
  21. Interesting stuff, Sensei. It's a shame we have to make concessions for AI stupidity like that... (why's it so danged cold in Virginia??)
  22. Yep, something's amiss. I got as far as clicking the "fly" button, then was kicked.
  23. :-k I just looked through the database, and there's no mention of you being on the ban list (in fact the ban list is empty). Perhaps it's a ping-kick setting that's getting you bumped off Gonzo. I'm sure Cephas will look it over later. 24. In "tools" "options" "advanced" "update" tab, select at least the option to look for new FireFox updates. I chose the "ask me what to do" button below that. Every time you start FireFox, it will search for a new version, and if found, will download the update. The next time you start Firefox, the new version will be installed and check for compatbility with any exiting themes and extensions you have (it can slo search for new extension and theme updates, but I prefer to do those at my discretion). With that tool, I've kept up to date on all the Firefox updates as they are created... I've been on version 1.5.0.4 for several days now.
  25. ~~Salute!~~ It goes without saying that Art's touch was felt by many. He had many interests, of a wide variety. I'm grateful that the Wing Walkers were part of his life, as he was part of ours. From my own perspective, I always enjoyed his gravelly voice, ready laugh and constant frustration at the injustices of our world. Maybe it's odd to "enjoy" another's frustrations, but Art always managed to give the worst stories of our age a perspective that was usually comic and so ... so his own. On the other side of that, there are the times when he would be so happy about the good things he came across, you couldn't shut him up! A New Yorker excited about something is a difficult person to get a word in edgewise with. ;) Art lived life, he loved life, and -without ever trying to- he made sure he's a memorable part of a lot of other lives. I feel priveleged to have known him, in that peculiar way we can these days, without ever having met him in person. Art, I hope you'll forgive the bad imagery and choppy video effects, but here's a little look at how highly you are regarded amongst the Wing Walkers.
