  1. Damn Mike stop doing that. When my Grandfather finally had to go into a nursing home in Coney Island Brooklyn, I used to stop on my way home from my monthly reserve drills on Staten Island and visit him for an hour or so. I never changed into civies when I went to see him as he was a WWI, vet who being a British citizen at that time served, in a Cavalry unit on the western front. It made him so proud to see me in my uniform on those days. He was always introducing me to the nurses and telling them how proud he was of me, and didn't I look good in my uniform. He was also quick to tell me how proud he was of me for serving my country and wearing my uniform. We all knew he was slowly going away from us. There were visits when the conversations would take sudden shifts or he would suddenly become silent. My Dad used to go see him 2-3 times a week, and one week he called me and told me If I was going to see Granpa to be prepared. I walked into the home and a nurse I'd met before, and who he always bragged to about me, took me to his room. I wasn't ready for what happened next. As I walked to his bedside in my C.G. uniform, he looked at me and asked me what did the cops want to arrest him for. It was a short visit and I didn't stop crying all the waay home. I still went to see him every month, although I now changed before going, as the uniform he was so proud of me wearing only made him upset. Six months later he was gone. I still miss him sometimes.
  2. Nice rig Dub! Looking forward to the possibility of flying with ya again.
  3. Maybe it's me, but I just spent the last hour trying to find a link in english, to purchase 4.05m. The only one I could find was in French and priced in Euros. Is there an english language link, or do I need to buy a French-English dictionary? Thanks
  4. You mean people really do that??? /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_rolleyes.gif&key=1e8c06ab12fb541f5359109fc2a9aa78454b8063e7aa8862e992af3163d7b4b4"> I had NO idea.
  5. I was hanging out around the hanger the other night and over heard a coupe of the mechanics whispering about how "el stinky" might put in an appearence at Dayton. Not sure if they mean't Goober or the striped one. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_wink.gif&key=940dab18e6395dabf49383a0bb376331df53e6f1880bab3f9e4e80745a8cc9ca">
  6. There was a thread done in the windows forum at Anandtech.com a few months ago. The initiator of the thread did a study on computer preformance with windows services running and with various ones shut down. I'm not a software guru so alot of it was over my head, but the short and sweet was that any preformance boost was marginal and no more than 2% could be expected. IMHO that is not enough of an increase to warrent mucking about with software that may or may not cause a problem.
  7. Given Sandmans above post, and wanting to ensure that the WW are as prepared as possible, I respectfully withdraw my name from this WW Battle. Gangster you can take my slot. I am being overtaken hard by R/L right now. I will be away at school in Baltimore all next week and have no chance of flying this week. The position I have applied for in Tampa is moving ahead faster than I anticipated and if I am selected for it, I will need to be down there by mid May. That means I need to start preparing for that possibility and getting my home here in NY ready for the market. The interviewer today said that the hiring decision would be made by "early next week". Add to all this a step daugter getting married on Memorial Day weekend, and it's easy to see I'm over extended time wise. I'll stop by the forum and keep up, but I need to go on a leave of absence from flying and other squad actvities. Thanks,
  8. If that's the case, I just don't undestand the business model at work here. How can they sell the whole console for less than the price of an equivalent computer CPU and make any money? Some other odd ramblings on this subject, in no particular order. Since software developers know there are more consoles out there than PC gamers, why are they not migrating the next round of sims from the PC to the console? It would seem they would have a larger customer base with consoles, and less frustration ensuring it ran properly. Does the PC than go back to being a word proccesor/business mschine only? If these consoles can connect online, can viruses be circulated among them? As we have with PC's? Sorry only just finishing my first cup of coffee.
  9. Heretics!!! They are loose in the chapel!! :D :D Consoles, ugh! Don't even own one. While I agree games on the consoles do look good, and run smoothly, I question whether at the present time they have the memory and CPU power to run a sim like IL2 or rFactor. If they do add the memory and CPU power to a console, is it still a console? If the price is now the same as a computer should it now be capable of doing more than playing games? And the circle continues. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_wink.gif&key=940dab18e6395dabf49383a0bb376331df53e6f1880bab3f9e4e80745a8cc9ca">
  10. Checking in as requested. I'm not even going to try any of my high school German, that was waaay to many years ago. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_biggrin.gif&key=64cd7b7a0036899205810ec0a5b90ed7121d5889dd92733089c47c9758b7f4ae"> I will not be able to make training tonight due to my work schedule. I will be around on Friday and Saturday night so hopefully I can catch up wih some of you .
  11. The larger 1080p sets are relatively new to the market, and that's reflected in the price. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_wink.gif&key=940dab18e6395dabf49383a0bb376331df53e6f1880bab3f9e4e80745a8cc9ca"> I haven't focused much on that as 'm looking for a TV, not use as a monitor. The wife saw an HD broadcast of National Geographic and is now sold on needing HD TV. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_biggrin.gif&key=64cd7b7a0036899205810ec0a5b90ed7121d5889dd92733089c47c9758b7f4ae"> My guess would be that the bigger 1080p sets will drop in price as more compitition enters that part of the market this fall. If you cn, you might be better off holding back till than.
  12. Plaque, I've been looking at big screen TV's lately as well. Don't know if the wife will let me put the computer on them so I've just been looking at PQ for HD. From what I have seen, Sony and Samsung have the best picture quality of the lot. That's just MHO of course. My viewing was done at a Circuit City with the TV's being on a satellite HD feed, via coax. I would expect an even better picture from HDMI or DVI connection. I know the above isn't much help, just my opinion, for what it's worth.
  13. As one with a less that state of the art computer, and a heck of a lot less flying skill than most I would like to keep the speed bar on as well as limited icons and padlock. The icons that were used for the VMF-214 battle were just fine for me, I don't need stuff showing up miles away. Since Bard has worked with me to teach me how to use padlock to overcome some of my poor vision for spotting at distance I would also like that to be around. I am not a real pilot nor do I profess to be or ever expect to be. The speedbar helps me to overcome that lack of real experience. Thanks,
  14. You just used up all your computer upgrade luck for the next 6 months. Ya know that don't ya? :D :D :D :D :D
  15. Tom's hardwares charts and test procedure have been shown in the past to have been less that perfect. Not surprised you can't equal their FPS Plaque. I use [H]ard ocp http://hardocp.com/index.html Or AnandTech http://anandtech.com/ For all my comparisons and evaluations.
  16. Thanks Cephas, While I didn't get to fly the actual event I did get immense value from the training and recon flights that were done on the server pre-event. While they may not have been as good as the real thing, those practice times were fun and enjoyable. I'm hoping like crazy I can make it for Stalingrad.
  17. Skipper! Dubs hoggin all the crayons again!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
  18. S! Good luck guys. I really wish I was flying with you tonight. Goober and I will be at the O'club keeping the scotch cold by pouring it over ice, one glass at a time. :D I'll try and fire up the old radio and hopefully be able listen in to part of the battle. I'm pulling for you and I know victory, even if hard won will be yours. Bars open when the fightings done, first round is on Pepe! /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_twisted.gif&key=76870aa9df6931b692ccc9ef4c7472a7834d1d9dfc6a76eccadd1fa39c0df891"> /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_twisted.gif&key=76870aa9df6931b692ccc9ef4c7472a7834d1d9dfc6a76eccadd1fa39c0df891"> /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_twisted.gif&key=76870aa9df6931b692ccc9ef4c7472a7834d1d9dfc6a76eccadd1fa39c0df891"> Fly Well! 19. That's what I'm running 8. Seems to do all right with IL2. I paid a lot more that $170 for it two years ago though. :D
  20. At those e-bay prices, it's worth it. I bought one when they were first discontinued at 14.95. Best 15 bucks I've ever spent. It does have a switch for cutting out the external front speakers and sending sound to the headset. I do use that feature, rather than a seperate a/b switch. As Sensei said, it requires no additional software to work with TS.
  21. What they said!!! /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/toast.gif&key=f562d31034c7cf7ca2012f6cbe0726d9d6a712935f921e6eef253e7b87fa9916">
  22. I'm with Plaque, It sounds like the CDRW to me. A bad motor would cause an excess power draw. From some reading I've done recently on PSU's, I've learned that many PS's will shut down if they get an excessive draw on a 12v rail. The idea is to protect the computer from major damage if voltage regulation in the PS goes bad. I would imagine a motor pulling to much current could do the same thing.
  23. I spotted it once Cephas mentioned it. I thought it was a spot on my monitor!
  24. I tried water=3 myself the other day. To do this I had to set the IL2 Vid setting to perfect. I normaly keep it on high. Here's what I found. My frame rates on Palm Base went from 55fps down to 28 FPS in perfect mode. While in flight on a heading of 000 my FPS was in the high 20's to low 30's area. While acceptable when flying alone, I don't know what would happen with other AC around. Any further drop in frame rate could cause a slide show. What was interesting was this. Some objects, Particularyly land, came into view at a greater distance. I had the tip of the thumb on my port wing tip and I could all ready see the top of the mountain on Goodenough rising out of the mist ahead of me. I repeated the flight in both Excellent and High mode. While the FPS was substantially higher, I needed to get closer to Goodenough before it appeared. All this may be particular to my hardware and drivers, I don't know. I'm hoping to get some time to mess with it tonight when there are others on the server. That's if my cable doesn't die during the predicted blizzard. :? I'm also curious about what effect this all might have on spotting objects.
