wasn't that excited about PF until NOW!

the engines sound awesome on those planes and I didn;t realize the decks were so narrow- That wasn't a Large carrier was it>?
thanks for the link-

I do hope they come through with being able to have FB/AEP and PF as one whole product- imagine the 'what if' scenarios that can be played out...

Don't get too enthused about the sounds in that movie (and several other vids of PF in action). The sounds are dubbed in, and are not actual game sounds.... but we can hope!

Ummm, yes, that's a fleet carrier, not an escort carrier. ;)

Crud, I was absolutely drooling over having those engine sounds in the game. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_e_sad.gif&key=38741f9e3530d7cdc640e0699ad44e6069f4d0e7d8af9de1ac5a402558336cb2">

I keep seeing the same carrier with the F4U's on the deck, and every time I see it I wonder if this is an example of how historically accurate this add on is going to be.

The carrier pictured is the U.S.S. Lexington (CV-2) She is easily identifiable by the 8" gun turrets. A visual cue to her beginings as a heavy cruiser hull. She was lost during the Battle of the Coral Sea, on 8 May 1942.

As for the F4u Corsair, we all know that the Brits had to prove to us that the plane could be safely flown from a carrier. The U.S. Navy did not clear the F4U fr carrier duty untill 1944. Prior to that it was used strictly from land bases and possibly some rare appearences on the new Essex class carriers.

So we have planes that didn't conduct carrier ops prior to 1944 flying from a carrier that was sunk early in 1942. Oleg must be spinning! As a naval history buff I know I am.

LOL, I'm glad you pointed that out to us Kat. I had a feeling something wasn't right, but couldn't put my finger on it.

Let's just say it's as historical as having MiG-3U's and Bi-1's available to fly in IL-2. There were... what? Seven? Mig-3U's produced and maybe three Bi-1's, but any given night you could find a server with either of them available.

I think it's more a ploy to get the American public interested. The F4U Corsair is probably the most recognizable WW2 aircraft to most Americans (due to it's being the "star" of at least one TV show -Baa Baa Blacksheep/Blacksheep Squadron). As for the carrier... maybe it's the only one fully modeled right now.

I've seen comments on at least one major flaw in these PF vids... the arrestor wire has so much slack in it that once an aircraft traps/engages the wire, the aircraft actually continues forward movement all the way to the center of the flight deck, abeam the island itself. Way wrong... an aircraft snagging even the last (four?) wire would still be stopped well short of the island. I'm sure that bug will be fixed by the time PF is released... the Naval aviation crowd simply won't allow such a glaring mistake to go un-commented.

About the arresting wire, I can't speak to WWII carrier ops, but I have observed live modern day carrier ops. On todays cariers there is quite a bit of cable run out. The cable does not bring the plane to an instant stop. While the cable run out may be inaccurate, I would be more concerned with the accuracy of the ship and plane models rather than the graphic representation of a limited event with in the came.

Just shows how nit-picky some people are about inconsequental details. Never mind the ship model is way off and those planes could never have operated from that vessel, but damn the graphic showing the arrester cable hs it pay out 75' to far.

I would have thought, if they were going to model an early war carrier it would have been the Enterprise. She was one of the first carriers actually built from the hull up as a CV. Both the Lex and the Sara started life as cruiser hulls. She also was the only one of the Pacific pre-war crriers to survive the entire war. Her ship model could be used at any time period in the pacific war. Instead we have a model of a ship that is sunk during the first carrier engagement of the war. But I guess that's just my nit to pick.

I'm sure if someone had the time, they could research the number of, and location of airbase pads, in FB, for accuracy.
Looks like a possibility that carriers are gonna be "representative" of carriers for that historical time period. Also a possiblity that it's a "work in process, and doesnt represent the final game".
Everyone has a different threshold of what "immersion" will be. Myself, I dont care so much about "shouldn't that elevator be 20 feet down the deck?" as much as if the deck will be rolling and pitching as conditions warrant. Sea was calm, sea was rough. I would hate to see a static carrier sitting flat as a land based runway. I doubt anything will match catching the 3-wire at night, on a angle-deck, ala Janes F18 Sim, but, PF still has some possibilities for "fun-ness" if you set weather to blind and make it night. Probabily not realistic as well, but beats anything ever flown to date, and not a far stretch to say, ever.
Can anyone image what the hell we would be flying, if IL2 never got made, and Oleg's and his crew went the "safe" way, ($$$ sales), and did some massive, interconnecting WWII first person shooter instead? Far less ulcers, and early retirement when all you have to model is tanks and trucks and small arms.

Just jumping in for a quick question:

The carier in the video looked like it was not underway but just sitting there.
I thought/believed that carriers would be making 10-15 knots into wind so that aircraft would get the added benefit of the 10-15 knot carrier induced `headwind'. Add that to the actual wind of the day and it would make a considerable difference to the aircraft taking off and landing.
(Perhaps in heavy seas the speed would be reduced?)

AND considering enemy submarine threats - Why would such an asset be left sitting as an easy target for a long distance torpedo?

I hope the aircraft carriers will be steaming along in the Sim.

I had another look at the video to listen to the engine sounds (as Reap said: 'Drool') - I bet Dollars to Doughnuts (Canadian eh!) that the engine sounds are Merlins. Very distinctive.

Bump

Has anyone tried copying this approach?

The track lets you see a successful approach in the Corsair. I noticed that the pilot retracts flaps just prior to crossing the threshold. I'm wondering if this might help with keeping the ac from bouncing, allowing for a better trap.
