Tunis mission 2 observations/problems

Recommended Posts

Don't give away strategic info but if you saw a problem, or something you liked post it here.

I know flak was still heavy, some of that may be due to increased AI skill in the new patch. To me they seem much more accurate, but then again it's always fun to blame everything on a new patch.

Personally I had a lot of fun and got lucky in that no enemy fighters came too close that Sandman did not chase off. I took quite a few flak hits, but nothing too serious until I knocked my prop off in a very low strafing run on a target on the uphill side of a dune. That is a very dangerous maneuver in a lumbering 110. Luckily my other engine brought me home safely. Kudos to my Fighter leads. On the flip side, our Stukas are having serious mission accomplishment problems that we are going to try and rectify and I hear the Allied A-20's are having problems also.

Only odd thing I saw was one Stuka and one 202 just orbited the island air base the entire time after I landed. Flak was heavy but not impossible. I took a lucky hit that just knocked my left wing tip off and it took full right rudder and aerilon trim as well as stick to hold her up so it was hard to turn at all.

Suggestion on the squadron/pairing. If possible make each two a ship a flight and/or squadron of it's own. I could order my wingman to do basic stuff but couldn't order him home had I been flight lead. I saw him take heavy flak hits early and was smoking badly but couldn't do much except tell him to rejoin...

i noticed a flight of aircraft that i guess were capping the central airfield just cruise happily by while we attacked.

i noticed the AI is HOPELESS when it comes to ground attack, even when given specific targets.

Can't say much about the AI lack of inititiative in stopping enemy attacks, but I can address the ground-attack thing. Instead of giving your AI ground attack units a specific target in the mission-planner, assign them the "area search" (or whatever it's called) option for the attack waypoint. Then the AI will do an expanding search-and-destroy of any enemy ground targets. It actually works.

I'll try your idea out next time SandMan, because like Bard was saying, the A.I. was basically useless against that base. This was the second straight SE where I perished in less than 10 minutes, this time it was due to the AAA and my lack of evasion skills. That being said, I think the AAA is a touch too accurate, in ONE pass, I lost my elavators, had a massive fuel leak, holes in my windows, and a busted engine. I'll just count this up to bad luck, but in flying online and offline with the new patch, the AAA seems to have damn near a 100% hit rate.

I agree with not only AAA but rear gunners. Who needs an escort when you can plunk engine shots as accurately as these guys do now.

Didn't one of the upgrades specifically change the AI gunnery to be less accurate? I hate when a change undoes something that was called for in another patch. Going backward is frustrating.

Rear gunners in a Stuka, have a death wish, (for both of us). They wait too long to shoot at bandit coming in from off six, and if the killer is flying up, directly behind, rear gunner would rather see our hair on fire, and our ass catching, than a few holes in the thing he spends the most time with in the air, the tail assembly. I think he imagines it as his naked girlfriend, on those long flights to the Bar-b-que we've been invited too. Any time I see a another plane turn towards us, he feels my boot in his butt. :eyebrow:

He loves his gun nearly as much as his tail assembly, he loves to fire off much needed rounds at God knows what, when I pull off the ground target. Who in their right mind, would want to save those bullets for keeping us flying when under air attack, but some stupid meat sack human? Oh, look, watch the Ai shoot a picture of a boob, in the dirt as I pull off a bomb run. :|

Stuka flyers needed, see SE axis commander, must be able to pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time, and know how to kick the Ai in the right place to let him know its time to get into his fetal position on the floor. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_bored.gif&key=d0bb2f6347e82cd7c17aa702ef8e0f2fc46be1615cd2555a6cfaafd0e1725801">

That was probably my flight, and you were prolly' unseen. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_redface.gif&key=b30c314ea10c72f3d32953a265be0c32a1435b472bb99313e5e3656e23efc144">

I was tasked with "patrolling the front". My 090 leg was uneventfull, my 000 leg I took some flak and at the end of the northern leg, my flight came across an enemy biplane which we promptly shot down. ( I think Screamer had front-row seats for that too) Then back 270 over to our side and I completely missed a lone A-20 under me but then came across a rather large bunch of spitfires engaged at the base as I turned to my 180 degrees leg. I collected SA and saw a lone spit, so I dove in, killed it, and in the middle of the ensuing fight, was jumped by another. I flew evasivly taking hits the whole while and brought my bird back to base and landed. So if it was me and my flight, you wern't ignored persay, I just hit the most vulnerable of all the potential targets.

I noticed while reviewing my track that a lone A-20 went unnoticecd right under me. I was wondering why my flight's 3 and 4 wern't following my "rejoin" command. Now I know why.

I had the potential to engage many targets, just wish I saw half of them. I did take the visual cue with AI on the biplane target though. As my flight made their way north, my entire flight veered about 20 degrees off course, and although nothing was in immediate sight, I followed their course lead and viola' a lone biplane.

So I cannot confirm the absence of valor for AI. They seemed to work just fine in my flight. I just need to read their intentions better. ( which is why I didnt want to fly a lead position). I have very little experience with the whole wingman/leads/flight command stuff with the TAB key.

Perhaps you were looking at different ground targets than what you were assigned to attack? Maybe its just "targets of opportunity" that AI have such a hard time with -- saving their ordinance for their mission goal instead. Just a guess.

All in all a great mission! I could get used to leading flights I think, just need alot of practice first.

I had a blast! Thanks Cephas!! ...and all ~S!~

WHEW!

OK, so that wasn't my flight that flew over Bard and his crew attacking our base! It was indeed a flight of A.I. MC 202s.

Me and my flight are cleared of any "failure to engage the enemy" charges. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_wink.gif&key=940dab18e6395dabf49383a0bb376331df53e6f1880bab3f9e4e80745a8cc9ca">

On the other hand --

[sarcasm mode on]

I found a huge issue!

Heh, as my flight was about to engage the enemy recon, , I gave schwarm2 (i.e. my flight) an "attack fighters" followed by an "attack my target" when I was able to get close enough to padlock it -- IMMEDIATLY following my command of my flight -- seems someone higher-up wanted to counter my orders (*cough-sandman-cough*) with a "schwarm 2 rejoin" command!

No wonder my flight seemed confused throughout the whole mission, they were getting orders from everyone.....and here I thought I was just inexperienceed -- glad it wasn't me. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_rolleyes.gif&key=1e8c06ab12fb541f5359109fc2a9aa78454b8063e7aa8862e992af3163d7b4b4"> :P

Guess I had my radio tuned to the wrong squadron frequency... /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_redface.gif&key=b30c314ea10c72f3d32953a265be0c32a1435b472bb99313e5e3656e23efc144">

Funny, my guys all did as they were told, for the most part... :?
