Quake 4!

Recommended Posts

WOW!

I was a huge Q2 fan but have not played an fps in a couple years but I downloaded the Q4 demo a couple weeks ago and had to go out and buy the game. I was not disappointed. It may not have any real advancements to the genre but it is a very well executed game with stunning visuals, and I have always liked the storyline even if it is not very complicated. The game had a lot of eerie moments, and many more great battles, the weakest link in the game was the few levels where they thrown in vehicular combat IMO.

The only real disappointment I had was that the multiplayer side of the game does not include bots to play against. I was really looking forward to playing with my kids using bots on arena maps. Supposedly the developer of OAK bots for the original QUake is working on an OAK4bot for Q4 so it will support them soon though. (I won't let my kids play the SP version for a while yet and they are not allowed to play online either due to the profanity and crudeness of so many online players)

From what I hear it is a lot like Doom3 except with the lights on... Now I want to try DOOM 3, but heck I had to use my flashlight a lot in Q4!

Sandman: can you change this thread to be for all FPS games instead of just Half-Life?

Gues I will try that FEAR demo now. Might even have to try HL2.

evryone that I know whos played HL2 says it was the best fps theyve ever played. period. and these are from guys who've played em all. Good chance you'll feel the same way.

I Heard about an upcoming fps where - the map layout changes ala diablo but still an fps. cant recall the name of it- supposedly you can play the levels co-op also. have you seen this one Cephas?
I'm not a huge fps fan but I would probably build a new pc for something like that.

halflife 2 doesn't have the adrenaline multiplay that's present in quake, but as a single player fps hl2 is good.

Just got Quake 4 today. Watch Target stores, I found one copy left on clearance at one store for $9.98, but still $40 at the next.

Could be a fluke, or a sign that Target is blowing them out, as clerks get time to change the price in the computer, and put those oh so lovely

red clearance stickers on the boxes.

Tried the HL2 demo after playing Quake and was not impressed enough to buy it. The story is better I am sure, but I am more of a shoot first ask questions never sort of player.

Q4 visuals are amazing. I am looking forward to Enemy Territory Quake Wars. I really liked the original Enemy Territory original game style and think it could be a lot of fun in the Q4 universe.

Quake4 1.1 beta patch was pulled because it could cause damage to wide-screen displays.

Probably be another up, to replace the one that got pulled.

What's the explanation for how it would damage the widescreen monitors?

Not sure, from http://www.Bluesnews.com

Quake 4 Patch Pulled [March 29, 2006, 09:29 am ET] - 15 Comments
The id Software Website has been updated (or perhaps downdated is the word) to remove yesterday's announcement of the new version 1.1 patch for Raven's installment in the shooter series. There is no explanation there, but we've gotten word on the problem:
Please take down your mirror for the Quake 4 1.1 beta and/or final. There is a problem with the widescreen functionality that may harm a user's monitor. We are working on a re-release and will make it available as soon as possible. Please advise your viewers that may be using the current 1.1 beta and/or final to NOT enable widescreen or disable widescreen if they are currently using it.

Just guessing that some refresh or vid. size settings that the game patch lets you chose, in 16:1 settings, might not be compatable with all LCD'S.

Interesting, I assume it forces the refresh rate above acceptable levels. That could definitely cause some damage.

I'm still in the 4:3 wasteland of monitor depravation.

Therefore in Q4 setup, I just left ratio at 4.3, didnt look to see what other ratios you get to choose. Just asuming 16.1 was a choice, but dont know, could well be just a "widescreen" choice.

Rumor has it, that only one, or some low number, of WS monitors have trouble with a setting in the patch, so it was pulled as a precautionary move, to keep the lawyers from buying another corportate jet from the proceeds of the class action suit from settlement of "the monitor destroying patch" action.

Just got started playing this. I like games that go on for 1 year or more, so Im playing on the hardest level as usual. With everything up except Ultra videocard settings, (for 512 meg cards only), and 16 x12 , I get 60 fps just looking around, and high 30's when Strogg madness breaks out.

Just got a pulse rifle, ha, just pissing off what ever comes at me. Gotta practice those head shots.

Got some fps tweaking I can do, hate to jump in tweaking, until I know what Im doing.

Just an FYI for you Plague...

16x9 and 16x10 are the standard widescreen format ratios.

16x9 would be 1920x1080 as an HD example, and 16x10 would be 1920x1200, which is what my monitor's native resolution is.

Patch 1.2 has been released. A smaller 1.1 to 1.2 or a full 1.2 is availible.

http://www.idsoftware.com/

I see the full 1.2, (I have the orig. 1.0), "is not compatable with other version game saves".

Crap, not too far into the game, (escorting the demo guy), but on hardest level, I fought for every inch of my progress.

Since I'm more into the single play than the multi at this point, guess I'll stay at 1.0, as it looked to me 1.2 is more about multi fixes and new multi maps.

Cant quit figure out the friendly AI in this game. In CoD, it was "we'll lead, or follow". If the human player lagged back a little the CoD AI would take point, and engage first, leaving "clean up" to the human, or if the human took point, the AI would eventually join you and make a half-ass fire team.

In Q4, I cant tell if the friendly AI will ever act like he's part of a fire team. This demo guy I'm escorting is a real doofus, not much better than the freindly bots in Q1. 'Course HE has the MG, and I'm down to having the lame pistol, after saving his stoopid butt AI friends, and used up all my MG ammo on gun turrets the AI want to engage, instead of taking cover.

I really got into Q2, finished it, and one official addon, and part of the another, and enjoyed the fresh thingies I got to splatter, (like the black ninja-ape like critters with the dayglow yellow blood), but not getting into Q4 single player, as of yet.

The Strogg seem a little too high tech for me in Q4, and for God's sake, where did they get those lame concusion 'nades? Man, during Q2 days, andfor months after, I would jump, if I heard the sound like a Q2 'nade bouncing around, when I heard something simular, in some other game.

Oh well, lucky I found one copy of Q4 on clearance, worth what I paid for it, but for $30 reg. price, I would of wanted something else, in the WWII theather.

Maybe my style of play is more suited to how the game is setup. I am pretty much a blitzkrieg kill em all style of player, AI just get in my way so unless I am forced to escort I prefer to leave them behind.
