WWPierre
On my visit "home" I took a drive with my sister along the north shore of Minas Basin on the way to visit my 103 year old aunt in River Hebert, close to the New Brunswick border. As we drove west, we were treated to views of Cape Split, across the mouth of the basin. The highest tides in the world occur in Minas Basin. Perhaps the most awesome display of the tides on our planet occurs at Cape Split, on the southern side of the entrance to Minas Basin (Cape Split may be reached by a pleasant two-hour walk along a popular hiking trail from the village of Scots Bay, which is a 30-minute drive north of Wolfville). Here at the time of the mid-point of an incoming tide, for a considerable distance the forest on the towering cliffs is filled with a hollow roar produced by the turbulence of the waters surging over the submarine ridges below. The currents exceed 8 knots (4m/s), and the flow in the deep, 5 km-wide channel on the north side of Cape Split equals the combined flow of all the streams and rivers of Earth (about 4 cubic kilometres per hour). Three hours later the spectacle pauses, and then begins flowing in the opposite direction.more info here: http://www.valleyweb.com/fundytides/Here is a slide show.http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jenn_foote/slideshow?.dir=/83e7&.src=ph
WWSandMan
 Wow... there's a lot of power in those waves. Interesting locale to visit, thanks for the links Pierre!
WWWringer
Cool, thanks for the information Pierre. I have heard about it and one or two guys that I have flown with have mentioned it as a good hike. With decent weather I see it on a regular basis outbound from Halifax heading West to the usual first `way-point' on the route - Millinocket, Maine. It is a great view from the air - but would be superb on the trail. Edited August 15, 2006 by Guest

vonurbach
WWPierre:Thanks for the pics/links re: the Bay of Fundy!I once played golf at the Algonquin Hotel, St. Andrews, N.B., back about 15 years ago. It's located right on the Bay of Fundy: http://www.fairmont.com/FA/en/CDA/Home/Activities/CDResortActivity/0,1095,code_type=GOLF&category_type=actv_type&property_seq=100127,00.htmlThat link above shows a photo of a par four "with water behind it"!I was playing on a beautiful day and had previously seen fantastic glimpses of a few golf greens framed by the brilliant blue of the Bay of Fundy. I couldn't wait to hit a high arching 9 iron into such a green. There were several intervening [maybe six holes] back in the woods where we couldn't see the Bay before I got to the par four. We finally got to the hole shown in the link above [a slight dogleg left from the tee out of a bank of trees] and hit our tee shots [from the tee we couldn't see the green or the "blue water" of the Bay]. Well, we walked to our tee shots and finally looked up and THERE WAS NO WATER behind the green - just bare mud and waterlogged detritus!! For a second I thought the world had turned upside down. I had never heard before about the "tides" at the Bay of Fundy but will never forget that day - remarkable stuff. Thanks for the links to Cape Split and Minas Bay - I spent 2 hours or so reading the links about it - very interesting.S!vonurbach
WWWringer
"Time and Tides wait for no man." I thought it was meant more for sailors than golfers but obviously I was wrong. Pretty tough when you have to schedule your Tee Time so that the 'scenic' holes actually look like the professional photos.

I had been looking forward all day to striking a masterful shot to that green [lol - not many of them in my game]. Almost asked for my greens fee back. Had I known back then about tsunami's I would have run like heck when I noticed no water at all in the bay [uphill].S!vonurbach
stranger
Haven't been to Fundy since the late 50's. Barely remember any of it.Most of my blood came to the New World through Nova Scotia. Eh Pierre, they still pronounce 'about' like 'a-boat'?

It was CAVU and I watched it pass below untill my neck got sore. /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_biggrin.gif&key=64cd7b7a0036899205810ec0a5b90ed7121d5889dd92733089c47c9758b7f4ae"> You could see the turbulence clearly.
