Mission for Thursday 1/6/2022: Meuse River Valley Sandbox 1944

Despite the new name, this is another run of the Holland 1944 map.  I renamed it because it has radically changed on the inside and the name better describes the location as the Meuse river runs in a semicircle all around this target area.

I have extensively reworked this Northern quadrant so far making it 100% dynamic variable strength (AI fighter) and difficulty (target scoring).  There are also many new marked targets and all the random targets are still there like convoys, barges, trains, air transports, etc.

Another major change is that now ground targets are activated by sectors (about 50km radius) rather than many dozens of small local zones.

In the Northern third of the full scale mission there is 5000 square miles of target opportunities.  In the next week or so I hope to expand back out to the original 15,000 sq. miles and if the overhead drops as I expect with the new layout I may even expand more.

I have been testing it myself but I need some help from you guys too, so please let me know if you see something wonky during the mission, like an AA gun pit with no guns activated in it in an area we have not attacked yet, or two trains running into each other any other such thing.

This map will hopefully turn into a prototype for our full-time dedicated Server if we can bring that to fruition (no pressure Biker  :) )

When this one is complete, I probably will switch to Winter '45 German themed mission further East on the Rhine following the same sandbox prototype.

There have been some changes to make it easier for Gold.

Bombers do not count towards AI strength now.

The number of fighter planes in each CAP group has been reduced.

Also, Gold started hitting the target areas before the fighters had a chance to neutralize the enemy airbase in that sector and come back to escort Gold, and the fighters got hit hard as well when they did strike the base.

Apparently I made it really easy for Gold as the link to activate CAP patrols link was broken.  The ground targets were also getting dropped too quickly IMO so I probably need to up the # of kills required.

Even without enemy CAP patrols I managed to get shot to pieces by Airbase Scramble fighters and the flak seemed really deadly as well, but I did another check and they are all turned to low.

I did fix those AA guns that had no gun pits making them nearly invisible.

Still even with all the glitches it was a pretty good time.

Not going to lie, it was nice making it to target and back again most the nite.

Cephas, I know different parts of the mission (ie, the mcu's) have different effects on how the mission plays, but can't help think of Bikers  Alb Dv mission.  At the end, it was a slide show, but the mission still stayed up.

At any rate, if some nite you want to put up a test mission for a half hour or so where you have a lot of stuff happening one after another every 2 mins or so to possibly get an idea where the threshold is I'm sure the other pilots would not mind helping you test.

I'm not totally convinced this is all mission related.  Seems to me at some point there would have been some visual impairments, and I never saw anything like that.  I could very well be wrong.

Yeah something funny happened with the server crash.  I am thinking I have a code error somewhere that caused a unit spawn spam because everything was going along fine, and then boom, server overload and a crash shortly after.

Finding it may be a bear though.

Oh yeah, nice

K4 for sure.  For the 190 enthusiasts I would probably lean A8 but I believe Sandman thinks it is not that great a version of the 190.  The D9 might be weak at low level though, I am not sure.

More than likely the D9 will be there because there will be some high altitude interdictions to do.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the FW-190 A8 at all. Too heavy, not enough horsepower. Overloaded and underpowered. Asked to do too much by it's owners. The F8 version for ground attack is quite good in that role, but inferior to all enemy air targets.

For higher altitude interception work, yes, the D9. For lower level stuff I'd prefer an A7, but will accept the available A6. Having 4x 20mm MG151 cannons within the wings (plus the cowling mounted 7.9mm guns) is a deadly weapon set. All the speed and maneuverability of the A5, with the advantage of exchanging the MGFF low velocity outboard canons for the superlative MG151 20mm cannons. I was considering the A6 for my late war racer, but the La-5FN seemed a better choice. I think I chose correctly. :)

Probably a mix of A6 and D9 then, thanks for the input Sandman.

I wish we had the F8, I could put that to good Jabo use.

We do have the F8, in a manner of speaking. By using the A8 and selecting the right loadout options you end up with the F8, it's even listed as the F8 on the loadout selection I believe...

And yes, it's a complete pig to fly with that huge bomb (and most of the other F8/G8 loadouts.) So without escorts, while carrying bombs, this thing is an easy kill for any fighter. And even after losing the bombs, all the extra armor it's carrying around still works against it in air-to-air scenarios.

This looks sorta like what we flew tonight in place of the planned Ottaker's War mission (which was nerfed for some reason.)

1) I had a blast on the mission tonight, flying in Gold flight's A-20's with Fry, Zed and Duck.

2) I didn't shoot any friendlies, didn't get shot by any friendlies, and survived all but one mission. And that one death was a slightly hard belly landing (I think the dev's over-shot the mark making hard landings fatal: used to not matter how hard the landing was, you would survive <not very real> ; now if you land hard enough to tear wet toilet paper, you die.)

3) Watched a couple very experienced Spitfire pilots have a hard time landing the Mk XIV cleanly. My advice: Long approach with the Mk XIV. She's a fast and powerful bird, and the big elliptical wing makes a lot of lift.

I have a few pics to post, will get to them tomorrow.

Apparently, I nuked about 10 hours worth of work filling in the South part of the Meuse River mission when I tried copying it over to the German side by renaming and "save as" to start working on that Sandbox mission and then started deleting things for the changeover.

Not sure what I did as "Save As" should leave the old version intact but probably was not paying attention and messed it up somehow.

Oh well, maybe with practice it will only take 8 hours to rebuild.....

.. and yes I searched all my other folders, the recycle bin and the Dserver for a copy of it...

On the plus side the mission ran really smoothly tonight from what I could see except for one target building that apparently does not have a damage model.
