Actually, Kat, my first official act as Recruiting Officer was to deputize all active WingWalkers as Assistant Recruiting Officers. So.......have at 'er!

Delayed on responding but what the heck....

100% however somewhat cheated as roughly 9 years ago all of this was part of my husbands "re-education of my lacking youth" (all the stuff I missed with a normal education/childhood)...

Lets see how you do with these 3 simple ones, I "do" remember these as on occassion the ladies of the local church would steal me away, and would let me just watch TV (only time I got to see a TV till about 24)....Anywho...all 60's things...

I had to think about American Pie because I don't remember actually hearing what he was singing about and it DID get a lot of airplay. But Buddy Holly came to mind as the most obvious answer.

I could not remember the RS Hobo character name. My fave was Crazy Guggenheim anyway.

Who said, "Aaaa-waa-aa-ayyyyy we go!" and what was the name of his spoof news segment? Hint "That was........"

Also one I don't know but can guess is what was Sky King's plane? Sorry but last time I saw that show was 1960 or early 61.

Did I read that right SM? 1963? I got my first neice in May 1962!
EDIT: I read that right. How close to the day of tragedy were you born?

Put me down the list somewhere there, Sept 1956, somewhere after Kat, LOL!

September 56! My senior year at Compton high school. Great year for me. Scored 27 touchdowns lead the coast league in scoring and rushing. All league and all state. Our team went undefeated till the last game in state and lost to Downey high school in the Final game 21 to 7. That year got me a full football scholarship to Brigham Young University. Brings back memories /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_biggrin.gif&key=64cd7b7a0036899205810ec0a5b90ed7121d5889dd92733089c47c9758b7f4ae">

Not really a star just big and fast. 220 pounds and ran the 100 in 10/4. In those days most of the kids that played high school football were not as large as now days. The biggest lineman on our team was 240 and he was fat /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=%7BSMILIES_PATH%7D/icon_cry.gif&key=af9ce749339d5f0fdb3c25b91f656db35bace5cb48def1ec035d87a80c3c565e"> the backfield averaged around 140 including me at fullback. Belive it or not our starting guards were twin brothers. Carey and Larry Baird they weighed in at 145 pounds socking wet. Both of them went on to make jr collage All American at Cerretos collage in 57 & 58. Our starting tight end was a softmore, Marven Flemming, and later had a long career with the Greenbay packers in the sixties. Our star running back was a kid named Bobby Smith. He went to UCLA on a scholarship and had a great four years there. He was drafted by the LA Rams and played there for five years. He is now teaching at UCLA.
I never played a game for BYU. After spring training and pre season I had a run in with the head coach about playing time. His attitude was no matter how good you were, Freshman do not play with the Varsity. I know I could have started every game for that team. But patience was not one of my strong suits in them days.So i gave up a very good scholarship and transferred to Compton Jr Collage after a long conversation with the head coach there. He flat told me that I would be lucky to make the team coming in so late but he would approve the transfer if I could get the school to register me that late. Well they were not happy about doing it at all. But after a few phone calls from some of my Moms friends in high places they made an exception. Well I made the team played there four two seasons and got my AA degree. I married my high school sweetheart in 1958 and had my oldest son in 1959. I played Pro football in 1959 & 960 but thats another story.

Songbird I was a Beech 18. The second Songbird (Songbird II?) was an early Cessna 310 - an A or B model. It had the symetrical wing tip fuel tanks.
(Later models had `flying' wing tip tanks. It was said the 310's with the older style symetrical tanks was `more dynamic' shall we say in the transvers/roll axis - in other words she liked to rock a bit.)

In 1973 I got my multi-engine instrument rating on a Cessna 310B - CF-DAY. It had a `barrel' DG, which made ADF approaches a real mental exercise , no DME, and the usual assortment of Nav radios.

For a pilot used to Cessna 150 and 172 singles for the most part - DAY went like a bat of hell! And sounded great too. :D

And to continue the trivia ....

What was Sky King's niece's name?

Why Penny of course! Any fan of the show knows that. :D

Ah, late 50's and early 60's Saturday morning TV.

5 Points for Kat!

(But some of us were more interested in the planes.)

When is "Whirly Birds" coming out on DVD?

Sky King was my #1 early airplane love influence.

#2 was the occasional B-52 passing over my Gram's farm while I was there.
They'd be low enough I could make out lettering on the underside, the warning messages or whatever not just markings for distance-view. But when you're 2 to 4 years old... well I couldn't read the stuff, just remember that and all those details while the whole sky seemed to shake and we'd be watching.
Loring AFB was about 16 miles away.

Somehow, Sky Kings' plane was a bit more 'approachable' as an idea of being 'usable'.

#3 was old issues of National Geographic, clear back to pre-WWII.

And in terms of love of flying, the local birds which there were SO MANY back in the 50's, those inspired me the most to dream of flying.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You olders got definite better knowledge than I do!

I got a brother born in 42 could compete except maybe about TV since 1) he was out a lot and 2) that part of Maine only had 2 channels until the 60's when there got to be 3! (I think there's still only 3 if you don't dish or cable.)
My sister born in 45 could definitely give a run for the money before her first stroke, and she does come up with some good ones still.

Eh, Pierre? You don't edit that ***-**** list no more? Good!
